Netflix has really transformed the way we watch movies and TV shows. It’s on demand and we can now “binge watch”. Another great thing about Netflix is are the “Netflix Originals” series and movies. Ones that are new and produced exclusively for Netflix, ones made in partnership with other networks or even sometimes shows that TV channels have cancelled and Netflix has then picked up and carried on making more.
Although these “originals” are great and everyone loves the idea sometimes it’s quite hard to find them and there is the fear that we are missing out on something that we would actually really enjoy. Simply doing a search on Netflix for “originals” doesn’t return all the results. A search on Google does bring up various lists with detailed text descriptions but sometimes what we really want is for them all to be on one page, categorised and a video trailer. This enables us to quickly see all the dramas or all the comedies or whatever, watch the short clip and then quickly decide if it’s something we want to watch or not…well, here on Steve Says this is is what you can get.
Let’s start with the dramas!
On November 6, 1983 in the town of Hawkins, Indiana, 12-year-old Will Byers vanishes mysteriously. Will’s frantic mother, Joyce, searches for him while Police Chief Jim Hopper launches his own investigation. Will’s friends Dustin, Mike, and Lucas discover a psychokinetic girl who claims to know Will’s location. As they uncover the truth, a sinister government agency tries to cover it up, while a more insidious force lurks below the surface.
The show examines the strange happenings in Hemlock Grove, a fictional town in Pennsylvania. Roman Godfrey, heir to the town’s wealthy Godfrey family, befriends the town’s newcomer, Peter Rumancek. Recent brutal murders in the town have stirred up rumors, and the two work together to shed light on the case while also hiding their own dark secrets.
Orange Is the New Black
The series revolves around Piper Chapman, a woman in her 30s living in New York City who is sentenced to 15 months in Litchfield Penitentiary, a minimum-security women’s federal prison (initially operated by the “Federal Department of Corrections”, a fictional version of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and later acquired by MCC, a private prison company) in upstate New York.
Inspired by Marco Polo’s early years in the court of Kublai Khan, the Khagan of the Mongol Empire and the founder of the Yuan dynasty (1271–1368).
The series begins with an eerie narration by John, “Sometimes you know something’s coming. You can feel it. In the air. In your gut. And you don’t sleep at night. The voice in your head is telling you that something is going to go terribly wrong and there’s nothing you can do to stop it. That’s how I felt when my brother came home.”
Sense8 tells the story of eight strangers: Riley, Will, Sun, Capheus, Wolfgang, Kala, Lito and Nomi, each from a different culture and part of the world. When the eight suddenly experience a vision of the violent death of a woman called Angelica, they discover that they are “sensates”: otherwise normal humans linked with a mental and emotional connection, making them able to sense and communicate with each other, as well as share their knowledge, language and skills.
Set and filmed in Colombia, season 1 tells the story of notorious drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, who became a billionaire through the production and distribution of cocaine, while also focusing on Escobar’s interactions with drug lords, DEA agents, and various opposition entitie
