The Kelpies: Never Look A Mythical Water Horse In The Mouth Unless You Are Taking A Photo

What Are The Kelpies?

The Kelpies are two big massive horse head things by the side of the road near Falkirk, well at least that’s the Steviepedia description anyway…

The official Wikipedia description is as follows…

“The Kelpies are 30-metre high horse-head sculptures, standing next to a new extension to the Forth and Clyde Canal, and near River Carron, in The Helix, a new parkland project built to connect 16 communities in the Falkirk Council Area, Scotland. The sculptures were designed by sculptor Andy Scott and were completed in October 2013. The sculptures form a gateway at the eastern entrance to the Forth and Clyde canal, and the new canal extension built as part of The Helix land transformation project. The Kelpies are a monument to horse powered heritage across Scotland.

The sculptures opened to the public in April 2014. As part of the project, they will have their own visitor centre, and sit beside a newly developed canal turning pool and extension. This canal extension reconnects the Forth and Clyde Canal with the River Forth, and improves navigation between the East and West of Scotland.”

I was beginning to think that these sculptures were so mythical that they didn’t actually exist because after driving around the same roundabout three times and then ending up in Falkirk Football stadium (but that’s a different driving related story) me, my mum and the two sat nav ladies finally arrived.

They were quite stunning…

It was really cold but still quite busy…

This one is called Mr Horsey McHorseface…

I asked him “why the long face” but just got a glowering look…

The second one is called Mrs Horsey McHorseface…

I asked her what she was looking at and sure I heard her mumble something about the weather and wishing she had one of these!

But don’t they make a lovely couple?

Of course, the obligatory selfie which I am still bad at taking…

Have you ever been to see The Kelpies or where was the last place of interest you went to?

Take a look at some of my other photos on Flickr.
