Memories Start With “Me” – Be Smarter Than Your Phone…

I stumbled across this post recently and thought it was really interesting. It made me ponder and think about some of my mottos in life…

“Appreciate The Moment”

I don’t think many people actually do, truly appreciate the moment they are currently in. If you stop and think for a second, how often do you look back at a time, say 10 years ago and reminisce about how good it was back then? But, when you were experiencing that time “live” you thought it was the worst time ever and constantly wished things were different.

Here’s an example…

I was walking to work recently via the same route I used to walk to a different job over 10 years ago. At that time I worked in a small convenience store, had to get up at 5am every day and work long hours dealing with drunks, shoplifters and generally rude customers.

I used to walk to work wishing and praying things were different.

So, forward 10 years or so, as I walked that very same route, down those very same stairs, I was overcome by memories of that period of my life and how good it really was.

I should have enjoyed it more.

Time!

Now, I try to appreciate every single moment as I experience it because, however good memories are – they are so much better experienced first hand.

I also don’t understand people who go to music gigs or other such truly amazing in the moment experiences and rather than soak up that moment in time they will watch/record it on their smart phones. Although pictures are good to look back on, once again – appreciate the moment at the time!

Every time I think of this I always hear songs in my head by Mike & The Mechanics. I’m not really sure why…

Appreciate your moments!

  1. I think gratitude helps us live in the moment. Not that I have gotten there, but being grateful for all the tiny moments and precious gifts that surround me is a good way for me to stay in the present. My phone is one way I capture that joy- or a blurry image of my finger over the lens.

  2. I agree. I’m big on trying to appreciate unique or just nice moments in life. I lucked into a great job 8 1/2 years ago. My job requires some travel and wherever I go I like to pause and look around and take a mental picture instead of a cell phone picture.

  3. So true…some of my best memories are of time with my sisters as we moaned about lack of money and the places we’d go and the things we’d do if we had money. We laughed and joked so much, and money or not we always had the craic…Now all I want are those days back, sitting drinking coffee or wine and dreaming our dreams…I dream of those days now and know these dreams can never come true 😦
