Today is a historic day in England. As of this morning, Queen Elizabeth II, who has been Queen as long as most of her subjects have been alive, becomes the longest reigning monarch in UK history.
Of course, she gave a speech–admitting this was not a title she’d aspired to, but hey, now that we’re here, she’ll take it. As of today she will have ruled for 63 years and seven months, passing Queen Victoria by a day. She celebrated by not celebrating. As outlets everywhere noted, her schedule of ribbon cuttings and appearances was not dissimilar to yesterday’s, or tomorrow’s. She just keeps calm and carries on, as is the British way.
