Soap Star Superstar: Dieter Brummer (Shane Parrish)…

Dieter Brummer played Shane Parrish in Australian soap opera, Home And Away, from 1992–1996.

As with other Australian soap opera, Neighbours, I don’t watch it as much as I used to but it was a big part of my life while growing up.

Dieter was 15 years old when he first got the part and was a big hit with all the teenage girls (and some boys) as he was a floppy haired surfer dude which meant he was semi-naked quite a lot!

Shane was a bad boy when he first appeared in the soap and his first storyline was breaking into Mr Fisher’s house.

After various other bad boy stories there was a big romance with hippy chick Angel and they eventually got married…

Would they live happily ever after? Of course not, it’s a soap opera and Shane got run over and died from complications afterwards…

Dieter was born 5 May 1976 in Sydney of German descent, his role as Shane was his first acting role. Since leaving the soap he has had parts in various other Australian shows and even popped up in Neighbours for a time.

Despite it giving his career a brilliant kick-start he says he is not proud of his time on Home And Away and regrets it – shame on him! Apparently Dieter and co-star Melissa George hated each other and Melissa is more bitch than Angel in real life.

It looks like he is between roles right now so we can only assume he has returned to the art of cleaning windows.

Thanks for the memories Shane!

  1. I used to watch Home and Away a lot (alongside Neighbours) in the 90s. I was in the same age group as Shane, Angel, Damien, Sarah etc and related to them in a generational way, even if my personality was a bit different from that of their characters.

Shame Dieter and Melissa didn’t get on in real life. I didn’t know much about their lives outside the soap, and don’t really know what was behind it all, so who am I to judge eh :-/

I don’t know much about Melissa George these days either…if she really was/is a diva, that’s a pity. I always like to think the best of people, whether I know them or not. But it’s not good when someone thinks they are better than anyone else.

I don’t like to feed off gossip, although I’m not suggesting Dieter is lying either. He could well be right, but my “looking for the good in everyone” hopes he’s not…..

    1. Hi Linda. Thanks for your reply. I too was an avid watcher and was in the same age group. I thought it was the best thing ever at the time. Sadly, re watching it now shows how “wooden” it maybe was but it still gives me that good nostalgia feeling. I too always look for the good in everyone so I’m not sure why they didn’t get on. Melissa has been in a few films and did you know she was Emma’s nanny in Friends?
