Previous winners of this award have been Adele and Emile Sande to name but a few. When I saw Tom winning it last year I didn’t really think much of him – the winners of this award don’t even get to sing at the ceremony which is a bit odd.
Anyway, the following months I seen his name all over the place but still didn’t think much of him – again I hadn’t really heard any of his songs. One Sunday evening when I was listening to Jim Gellatly In Demand:Uncut I heard a song that I just had to make sure I knew who it was. It was Tom Odell, of course. I loved it. The song was “Grow Old With Me”
I had to go and download the album right away. Since then I constantly listened to the album – on iPad, iPhone and iTunes – iLoveit. “Another Love” is another brilliant track. It starts off quite slow but about 1/3 of the way through the pace really picks up and you have to crank up the volume.
“Storms” is another upbeat tune that you just can’t help tap your feet to. Not advised when you are standing in the aisle of the supermarket however – strange looks come your way…
My idea of what makes a great album is that they must have a nice balance of up tempo songs and chill out tracks and this album certainly gets that just right. “Heal” is a nice big piano ballad of a chill out track.
“Till I Lost” is in between the two moods and really shows off his vocal range. There is also a demo version of this on the album which is much more piano led and is a must listen to.
A brilliant album and featured in my iTunes chart of the year (remember I’m Steve And I Am An iTunes-a-holic…)
If you like hearing artists cover other artists songs then he does a great cover of Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble” which is on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge 2013
I’m really hoping that Tom is currently in the studio recording new material for us to hear soon!
